New Brunswick Interpreting Services
Book an Interpreter
NBDHHS/SSMNB coordinates American Sign Language (ASL)–English and Langue des Signes Québécoise (LSQ)–French interpreter services across the province of New Brunswick.
Our online booking link is coming soon. In the meantime, please contact our Interpreter Coordinator directly by phone or email.
We provide interpreting services on behalf of the Government of New Brunswick; specifically for the Departments of Social Development and Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour (PETL). We also coordinate services for the private sector on a fee-for-service basis.
The Deaf consumer does not need to organize payment of these services — we will facilitate the confirmation of assignment and payment on their behalf.
Programs We Coordinate
Social Development — NBVLIS
New Brunswick Visual Language Interpreter Services
Social Development provides services under the contract of New Brunswick Visual Language Interpreter Services (NBVLIS). Types of services include, but are not limited to: medical, legal, counselling, social service, employment (applications, interviews and crisis intervention), and education (parent–teacher meetings where the parent is Deaf).
PETL — TESS
Training, Employment and Support Services
Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour (PETL) provides services under Training, Employment and Support Services (TESS). Services include post-secondary studies, job interviews, on-the-job training, and crisis intervention.
Private Sector
Fee-for-service coordination
Private sector services may also be coordinated on a fee-for-service basis. The organization, employer, or government department (other than those listed above) is responsible for payment of the service. We facilitate the confirmation of assignment and payment so the Deaf consumer does not need to organize this themselves.
Interpreter Qualifications
In New Brunswick, all interpreters must be a graduate of an ASL–English Interpreting program, as well as a member of the Canadian Association of Sign Language Interpreters. They have also provided clearance from an enhanced criminal record check.
All interpreters are screened to ensure interpreting competency. Interpreters without a Certificate of Interpretation (COI) must take and pass the New Brunswick ASL–English Screening Tool at a level 3 or higher to interpret in New Brunswick. We consider the Screening Tool to be an entry level for interpreting in New Brunswick.
